Right-of-Way Process

If you have specific questions about the right-of-way process or relocation benefits, please call us or schedule an appointment with our right-of-way specialists at the Community Office.

What is right-of-way, and why is it needed?

When SCDOT builds or improve roads and bridges, we often have to acquire property, known as “rights of way.” We have uniform practices for conducting property acquisitions, providing relocation assistance, and preparing appraisals. We follow the Uniform Relocation Assistance & Real Property Acquisitions Policies Act of 1970, which protects property owners’ rights and ensures everyone is treated fairly and equitably during property acquisitions.

Unsure if your property may be impacted? Look it up or reach out to one of our right-of-way specialists.

What is SCDOT’s right-of-way process?

Right-of-way advisory services, including in-house SCDOT right-of-way specialists, are offered at the Community Office (5605A Rivers Avenue) for impacted residents.

Enhanced right-of-way services will be offered as part of the I-526 Lowcountry Corridor WEST Community Commitments Program with priority for the impacted communities of Ferndale, Highland Terrace, Joppa Way, and Russeldale. These services include home buyer assistance, housing vouchers, affordable housing coordination, and transportation for viewing replacement properties. Learn more.
