School-to-Work Program: Internships
SCDOT has partnered with BCDCOG to provide a program that increases career opportunities in the transportation industry. This program will explore all levels of opportunities from entry-level positions only requiring a high school diploma to professional-level opportunities. This program will be offered to middle and high school students and young adults.
A Be Pro Be Proud event is scheduled for May 22, 2025 at North Charleston High School. Be Pro Be Proud SC is a workforce initiative that introduces students to high-paying, in-demand fields, many of which are available to them upon graduation from high school with little-to-no educational debt incurred. SCDOT has partnered with BCDCOG to provide up to 20 internships to high school students, college students, and young adults (up to 25 years old) to enhance employment opportunities within the fields of construction, planning, engineering, etc. that would be required to construct the I-526 improvements.
Pre-Employment Training
Recognizing the large number of skilled workers that will be needed to construct the I-526 improvements, SCDOT is developing a pre-employment training opportunity to be held prior to the construction of the I-526 highway improvements. For individuals with limited or even no experience, this training will provide actionable skills to help increase their employment opportunities in the construction industry.
Small Business Development Program
SCDOT will also conduct information sessions to highlight opportunities to work on the I-526 LCC WEST project during design, right-of-way, and construction. These sessions will be held at the Project Office.
