Community Air Quality Monitoring Program

“”

Concerned about pollution during construction? Air quality sensors will be installed to detect fine particles of pollutants (Particulate Matter 2.5) in Ferndale, Highland Terrace, Liberty Park, and Russelldale. These sensors will provide real-time air quality data online to during construction.

What’s next?

We have started gathering background information on air quality in the I-526 Lowcountry Corridor WEST area. By collecting this data now, we will be better informed as we monitor and maintain air quality during construction

Community Enhancements Program

“”

We heard how important bicycle and pedestrian safety, access to community centers and transit, stormwater improvements, and more were to your community. As a result of significant public input, the Community Infrastructure Enhancement Plan (CIEP) (PDF) was developed which forms the basis for this Community Enhancements Program. This program will provide infrastructure improvements (think community upgrades) within the Ferndale, Highland Terrace, Liberty Park, and Russelldale neighborhoods to address bicycle and pedestrian safety, access to community centers and transit, landscaping options at neighborhood entrances, project-related stormwater improvements, bus shelters, and traffic calming measures that would be implemented as part of the project.

What we have done

This plan was developed based on input from the Community Advisory Council and the residents from the impacted neighborhoods. It has been coordinated with the City of North Charleston and will be addressed prior to construction of the interstate improvements.

Noise Barriers Construction

“”

We heard loud and clear the importance of having barriers to protect your communities from the noise and other potential impacts the highway improvements might bring. We’re committed to building noise barriers throughout the impacted communities. Noise barriers are walls constructed along a highway to protect sensitive land-uses, such as homes, from impacts associated with transportation projects.

We will construct noise barriers along the eastbound and westbound sides of I-26 and I-526 and Remount Road interchanges to benefit the Highland Terrace and Liberty Park communities and the westbound side of I-526 between the Rivers Avenue and I-26 interchanges to benefit the residents of Liberty Park. We will also construct noise barriers along the eastbound side of I-526 from the I-26 interchange to east of the CSX railroad tracks to benefit the residents of the Russelldale and Ferndale communities. An additional noise barrier will be constructed along the eastbound side of I-526 and the eastbound exit ramp at the Montague Interchange to benefit the west side of the Camps community. To better visualize where and how these might fit into your community, view the map below.

Because of the nature of these barriers, they cannot be constructed until the interstate improvements are constructed.
